It was no philosophical pun when the doctor said a good twenty-five years ago that “the master can die any time”, but thanks to the student Johan, who would not accept his old master’s transience, he is still alive today, if only just barely.
We are in the living room where the master used to teach his students to sing. Here he lies in a death-like state in his bed, while Johan obsessively tries to keep him – or what’s left of him – alive.
Based on the master teaching in classical singing pedagogy, Kunstteater’s new song and performance piece All-Time Favorite deals with a major theme in European educational history, the conflict between tradition and personal freedom, here seen in the relationship between teacher and student. In the work, this relationship is expressed through the interaction between the performer Mikkel Baungaard Thomsen (the student) and a bedridden sculpture (the master).

Kunstteater was founded by visual artist and director Mathias Dyhr and is an interdisciplinary art project at the crossroads between visual and performing arts, where Dyhr creates and stages performative works in collaboration with changing artistic actors. Perfomances to mention Showstopper (2019) at Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium – Odin Teatret, Idéerne (2021) under Socle Du Monde Biennalen (HEART – Herning Museum of Contemporary Art) and Baby’s Show and Tell Extravaganza (2022) at Kunsthal Aarhus as well as the performative exhibitions Alle i Husene (2020) at Holstebro Kunstmuseum and Gøglerne (2022) at Den Frie Udstillingsbygning in collaboration with Husets Teater.
Mikkel Baungaard Thomsen (b. 1992) is an opera singer and actor and is trained in classical singing at the Jutland Conservatory of Music. He has participated in various church works, operas and plays including, among others, in Kunstteaters Alle i Husene and Idéerne, Operaen i Midtens Den Stundesløse by Bent Lorentzen, Gounods Romeo et Juliette and Stravinskys The nightingale. Baungaard Thomsen also launched the project Solskinkoncerter in 2022. In addition to his practice as a singer and an actor, Baungaard Thomsen is a song teacher at Den Jyske Sangskole in Herning.
Mathias Dyhr (b. 1991) is a visual artist and director and graduated from Det Kgl. Danske Kunstakademi. In 2018 founded Dyhr Kunstteater. He is also part of the artist duo Mathias & Mathias with Mathias Toubro, and together they have a long practice behind them with exhibitions and decoration tasks. They have received the Carl Nielsen and Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen talent award, the Svend Dalsgaard Legacy and the Niels Wessels Bagges Fonds legacy.
All-Time Favorite is Kunstteater’s latest performance work, co-produced by Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium with support from the Statens Kunstfond and Ege Fonden.
